POSCO won the bid by Shinsegae E&C to supply H-type steel and thick plate for the Dongdaegu Multi-Transfer Center construction project. Shinsegae E&C opened selective bidding for 32,000 tons of H-type steel and 3,000 tons of thick plate with POSCO and Hyundai Steel as appointed contractors. The project, scheduled for completion in 2016, involves the construction of Korea’s first private capital-invested multi-transfer centre with a gross area of 300,000ft2 and 100,000ft2 of floor space. Total working expenses is expected to reach EUR 430M.
In the beginning, POSCO was not qualified for the project because it was designed to use RH-beams. However, the POSCO Steel Building Materials Marketing Team and RIST Steel Structure Research Center worked together to change the design to use BH-beams and proposed a cost-saving solution with the use of high-strength HSA800 steel material, leading Shinsagae to select POSCO.
The project paves the way for POSCO to bid contracts to supply large RH products currently produced only by Hyundai Steel in Korea, and to supply BH products using POSCO-made materials. POSCO will push its boundaries forward, from offering products like thick plate, into becoming an H-type steel supplier that provides key materials for construction projects, sharpening its competitiveness in competition for contracts.
